How much data does Spotify use
Earlier, we used to rely on cassettes that cost little. Now we rely on spotify that costs nothing, if you’re comparing in terms of the same currency.
In terms of data usage, spotify exceeds cassettes as the latter charge none. For those with limited data plans, Spotify can be a nick on the pocket. How much it nicks? Let’s check out.
Spotify uses nearly 2MBs of data per 3 minute song. That makes 40MBs every hour. Data usage depends on the quality of the music you are streaming – the lower the quality, lower the amount of data used. You can adjust the quality of the streaming music in this way –
Go to Library > Settings > Music Quality
Now you would have to find out of the options what quality you want –
• Normal quality – nearly 96kbps
• High quality – nearly 160kbps
• Extreme quality – nearly 302kbps
• Automatic quality – default settings. Depends on the quality of internet connection. Minimum 96kbps
Per song data usage –
Normal quality – 2 MB High quality – 3.5 MB Extreme quality – 7.5 MB
Spotify stores songs in cache and retrieves them next time you play the same song so actual data usage in case of same song streaming is less.
So on an average, one hour Spotify streaming every day for one month can nick 1 GB out of your data.
Monthly data usage 1 hr per day –
Normal quality – 1.2 GB Extreme quality – 4.5 GB
Listening to Spotify offline from downloaded playlist can save all of your data but that requires a premium subscription. That way, you can download up to 3,333 songs per device and can listen to them without even an internet connection. One of the noticeable things is, Spotify streaming charges less data than YouTube streaming.
You can also check the data usage so that Spotify does not use up too much of your data. Simply, go to your phone Settings and check your Mobile Data usage. This way you can manage your data and play songs accordingly.
Some telecom operators provide free music streaming. So, if you are dead serious about it, you can opt for one of those ways. Get your mobile data plans carefully. Some of them provides more and charge less. Opt for speedier ones so that less data is used up while streaming.
It is always advised to use Wi-Fi for unlimited streaming but if you are an audiophile and don’t really count the trees while eating mangoes, jump into this ocean without counting how many drops touch you. Spotify streams music and peace of mind together. Don’t let over consideration of data usage spoil the fun for you.
