HOW TO CREATE, SET UP AND MANAGE DISCORD SERVERS
Discord is a well known name in gamers’ world today. Its easy design, simple operation and free to use feature are some of the specifications that makes it unique and preferred among all of the chat platforms worldwide. Most of the people using discord find it easy to use but when you are new to it, you may find some things incomprehensible. So here we are, telling you all about creating, setting up and managing discord servers. Let’s start!
Creating a discord server
There are two cases in creating a discord server: First, you are already on discord and you are creating another server; Second, you’re creating a discord server for the first time. We’ll talk about the second case first. Following are the steps to create a discord server if you’re new to it.
Now that we are creating a Discord server, it is understood that we would have to install Discord firstly.
Creating the Discord account
Create an account on discord. When you would install the application, you would be given the option of creating a free Discord account.
Creating a server
When you open your account, you would get an option of creating or joining a server. This step is the only significant difference between being new on Discord or creating just another server. In the second case, you would not be asked for creating a new server. You would just see a ‘+’ sign and create a new server by this process. In the first case, select create a new server. Both steps converge after this one.
Name your server, choose your region. Mostly it detects the region but its not a big deal if it doesn’t. Click ‘Create’.
Opening the server
Now, your server is created and automatically, you’re connected to it. At the left side of your screen, you would see your server name. Click on the drop down arrow beside it. It would give you the options of inviting people on your server, settings or adding channels.
Setting up a Discord server
Setting up a Discord server basically means setting up roles or permissions on discord. Roles are permissions accorded to members on your server so that basic or whatever functions you want can be managed by the members. Roles are given to share the responsibilities of server and especially of crowded servers.
When you have many members on your server, it gets nearly impossible to manage all the roles by yourself. You have to share some roles like banning members, keeping the order etc. There is an option of giving particular roles individually to members but that is a very tedious process. Creating roles and assigning them is a rather easy process. We’ll explain to you the steps for assigning the roles on Discord.
Step 1 – Click server settings and open ‘Roles’.
Step 2 – At the top of the screen, you would see ‘Roles’ written. You would see ‘@everyone’ written under it. It is a basic set of permissions given to all members. Click on the little ‘+’ icon beside ‘Roles’. Now select a role to manage what permissions you are according to that role. You can give a name of your own choice to it.
Step 3 – There is a set of permissions that you want to accord to that role like banning members, deleting messages, even managing roles. Choose from that set. There is a role of moderator that allows the member to ban and delete messages. Choose accordingly.
Step 4 – Now, we have created the role, it comes down to assigning the role to users. For that, right click on their name and check the boxes of roles to be assigned under the roles tab.
Step 5 – There is a concept of colors in the roles too. Every role has a color. When you assign that role to a user, that user would have their name in that color on the list.
Setting up roles helps you manage server and makes it less messy. Assign roles carefully and to appropriate people or it may turn out to be a nuisance for you.
Managing your Discord server
Now that we are down to managing our Discord server, it mainly consists of keeping our server neat and organized. For that, Discord has a channel feature in it. You can create a new channel by right clicking anywhere in the channel section and selecting create channel.
Step 1 – After you create a channel, you have to name it and select the type of the channel. Type includes whether it should be a text channel or a voice one.
Step 2 – Next step is creating a category. You can name your own category. Categories have permissions like roles. You can manage the channels under the category according to the permissions accorded to the category.
Step 3 – Channels also have their own specific permissions that you can choose by clicking on the gear icon next to the channel name. Now these permissions are by default the ones assigned to the category under which the channel belongs but you can change them as well.
Channels are created to manage the discord servers properly. Create and manage your own channels.
Things to keep in mind
Very frequently, abuse of authority has been reported on discord. You give roles to members and they misuse them. You gave the power of admin to someone and they wreaked havoc. Here are some precautions you have to take before assigning roles and managing channels.
● Create a different admin role that has powers above all the other admins and assign it to yourself or the most trusted ones only.
● Under the @everyone role, there are some roles that you may not want everyone to have, like reacting to your messages. Manage this role properly because everyone has the powers under this role.
● The ‘Audit Log’ under server settings keeps track of the activities of all the admins. Keep a check on them.
● Be very careful with the Admin role. It assigns almost all the powers of the server to an individual. Assign it to only those you trust.
Discord is a very friendly platform and those who want to benefit by it can get enough from it but meddling with other users or abusing the platform can create problems for you at least in the virtual world. Pay attention to your own activities and that of all the users on your server and don’t procrastinate strict actions.
